Message

Isaiah 42:1-9

The Lord says,

“Here is my servant, whom I strengthen—
    the one I have chosen, with whom I am pleased.
I have filled him with my Spirit,
    and he will bring justice to every nation.
He will not shout or raise his voice
    or make loud speeches in the streets.
He will not break off a bent reed
    nor put out a flickering lamp.
He will bring lasting justice to all.
He will not lose hope or courage;
    he will establish justice on the earth.
    Distant lands eagerly wait for his teaching.”

God created the heavens and stretched them out;
    he fashioned the earth and all that lives there;
    he gave life and breath to all its people.
And now the Lord God says to his servant,
“I, the Lord, have called you and given you power
    to see that justice is done on earth.
Through you I will make a covenant with all peoples;
    through you I will bring light to the nations.
You will open the eyes of the blind
    and set free those who sit in dark prisons.

“I alone am the Lord your God.
    No other god may share my glory;
    I will not let idols share my praise.
The things I predicted have now come true.
Now I will tell you of new things
    even before they begin to happen.”

Luke 1:26-38

26 In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, 27 to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28 The angel went to her and said, ‘Greetings, you who are highly favoured! The Lord is with you.’

29 Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. 30 But the angel said to her, ‘Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favour with God. 31 You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants for ever; his kingdom will never end.’

34 ‘How will this be,’ Mary asked the angel, ‘since I am a virgin?’

35 The angel answered, ‘The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. 36 Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month. 37 For no word from God will ever fail.’

38 ‘I am the Lord’s servant,’ Mary answered. ‘May your word to me be fulfilled.’ Then the angel left her.

United Prayer Event

SWBA United Prayer Event

Christmas will be different this year in many ways but will, no doubt, still be a busy (maybe even chaotic) season for many of us!

Please join others from across the south west for this special Advent UNITED Prayer event as we seek to still our hearts and centre ourselves on Jesus as we pray with and for each other and for those in our communities.

This will be an opportunity to intentionally start Advent well and to cry out to God that the HOPE of this season is made known through the Church to a world that so desperately needs it… “O Come, O Come, Immanuel”.

You can participate via Zoom - get in touch for the details - or on YouTube by clicking here.

Church Meeting

There will be a church meeting at 8pm on Wednesday 9th December on Zoom. This will be a chance to approve the budget for 2021, but also to share together and pray for the Christmas season. More details will follow shortly, but please put the date in your diaries.

BMS Prayers for the Week

BMS is passionately committed to bringing the Word of God to some of the least evangelised communities in the world. Please pray with us this week for our work amongst the least evangelised.

- Pray that God will open new doors for BMS workers and partners to present the message of God’s love in places where the gospel is not yet known.

- Praise God for BMS workers Helen and Wit Boondeekhun who are church planting in Thailand. Many people are open to hear the gospel, but the workers are few. Pray that God will send more workers to these communities.

- Please pray for BMS workers in Nepal, where anti-conversion laws make sharing the gospel difficult. Please pray that their witness is powerful, and that Christ would be known.

- Pray that God will encourage people to become more open to the message of Christ in Tunisia. Pray that BMS workers and partners will be ready to present the gospel to those seeking Jesus.
